Cindy Pasky Bio


Cynthia J. Pasky is the founder, president and CEO of Detroit-based Strategic Staffing Solutions (S3), a provider of information technology consulting services, customized solutions, vendor management programs and an executive search program. Pasky founded S3 in 1990 with three employees and has grown it to a company with 23 offices and more than 1,700 employees in 23 U.S. cities and two European locations. The company has posted 19 consecutive years of growth, with 2008 revenues of $160 million.

In addition to her business responsibilities, Pasky is a member of the board of directors and the executive committee of Detroit Renaissance, is immediate past chair of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce and continues to serve as a member of the Chamber board. Pasky also has been named one of Detroit's Most Influential Women by Crain's Detroit Business. S3 recently was named one of the top 25 WBE's in the country by Women's Enterprise USA Magazine. S3 also has been recognized as one of the "101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For" by the Michigan Business and Professional Association (MBPA), who also recognized S3 as the "Best of the Best" in the Top 10 Elite category in 2004.

S3 also was named one of metro Detroit's "Best Places to Work" by Crain's Detroit Business in 1999, 2001, and 2003, and for nine years was recognized as one of Detroit's "Future 50" by the Detroit Regional Chamber.

While leading a steadily expanding company, Pasky also has found time to be actively involved in numerous community activities and non-profit organizations. Pasky serves on the Board of Detroit Downtown Partnership, Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan, United Way of Southeastern Michigan, U. S. Baltic Foundation, Detroit Economic Club, Detroit Youth Foundation and the Detroit Institute of Arts. She is also a board member of Your Child, a nonprofit, nonpartisan coalition of business, education and family organizations dedicated to improving Michigan's attitude toward education, and serves on the Visitor's Board for the Kresge Eye Institute. S3 also sponsors an annual run on Belle Isle.

Marjorie Sorge
Executive Director
Detroit Regional News Hub

Marjorie Sorge is executive director of the Detroit Regional News Hub. The Hub is a nonprofit entity devoted to enhancing the image of southeastern Michigan through targeted local, national, and global media relations.

Detroit Regional News Hub is one of six “Road to Renaissance” strategies created by Detroit Renaissance Inc. to transform the region’s economy. The organization will place an emphasis on communicating under-reported information about the region’s growth, employment opportunities and quality of life to traditional media, trade press in industries that are strategic fits for the region and new media outlets.

Initial funding is primarily from Detroit Renaissance and the New Economy Initiative, a collaboration of foundations. Sorge assumes the role of executive director of the DNews in November 2008 and will report to a board of directors representing the funders, with a media advisory group of local news and media executives offering professional advice. Sorge is also a principal in M3 Strategies, a strategic communications counseling company. She joined M3 Strategies from Metaldyne Corporation where she served as vice president of corporate communications.

Sorge has also served as director of corporation communications for Visteon Corporation and as executive on loan from that company to Governor Jennifer Granholm and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth. During that time she was involved in developing the state’s automotive, alternative energy and workforce strategies.

Before moving into the corporate world, Sorge spent 23 years as an automotive journalist. She has been editor-in-chief of Automotive Industries magazine, executive editor of Ward’s Auto World, labor editor and feature editor at Automotive News and a staff writer at The Detroit News. During her career in journalism she covered all areas of the auto industry including boards of directors, financial, labor negotiations, new products, manufacturing and new business trends and the environment.

Sorge is member of the Kettering University Board of Trustees and is on several boards of directors including the Society of Automotive Analysts and Automotive Press Association. She is active in charity work and is a past member of the Forgotten Harvest board of directors and currently serves on the advisory board of that organization. She is also on the advisory panel for the Automotive Hall of Fame.

David Brandon

As Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Domino’s Pizza, David A. Prior to joining Valassis, Brandon worked in sales management at Procter & Gamble’s Food Products Division. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he was a member of three Big 10 championship football teams, under legendary Coach Bo Schembechler.

David W. Joos is president and chief executive officer of CMS Energy and chief executive officer of its principal subsidiary, Consumers Energy.

Joos joined Consumers Energy in 1976 and has spent his entire career with the company with the exception of the period 1979 to 1983, when he worked as a design engineer for a major architect-engineering firm. During his CMS career, he has held senior level positions in operations, engineering, marketing and regulatory affairs. Prior to his current position, Joos was president and chief operating officer of CMS Energy and Consumers Energy from 2001-2004.

He is chairman of the board of directors of the Michigan Manufacturing Association, chairman of the board of directors of the Nuclear Management Co., and a board member of the Michigan Colleges Foundation, and the Michigan Economic Development Corp. He is also a member of the board of directors of Steelcase Inc. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering science in 1975 and a Master of Science degree in nuclear engineering in 1976, both from Iowa State University. In 1989, he completed the Program for Management Development at the Harvard Business School. He is a licensed professional engineer in Michigan.

Ann Lang is President & CEO of the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP), a private/public partnership of corporate and civic leaders including Board representation from Detroit 300, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, Detroit Renaissance, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and the Mayor’s Office. DDP’s stewardship role for downtown covers strategic and physical planning, public space maintenance, research and marketing. Its principal programs for 2007 are the NEXT DETROIT: Clean Downtown initiative and the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.


Lang previously served as Executive Director of CEOs for Cities, a national alliance of mayors, corporate executives, university presidents, and foundation and nonprofit leaders, established to advance the economic competitiveness of cities.


Prior to joining CEOs, Lang was President & CEO of Pikes Peak United Way where she led the organization’s turnaround and re-established its focus as a catalyst for community change in the Colorado Springs region.


In Detroit, as President of the New Center Council, Inc., she participated in revitalization of the 60-block New Center area surrounding General Motors headquarters.


Lang was the first woman to chair the International Downtown Association of 450 downtown development professionals from 250 cities in the U.S. and Canada. She earned a MBA from the University of Denver and a BA in Communications from Wayne State University.

 

George Jackson

George W. Jackson, Jr. became interim President & CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) in February, 2002, and was elected to the position on a permanent basis in April 2002. The DEGC is a private, nonprofit corporation devoted exclusively to supporting Detroit’s economic development projects and initiatives by providing technical, financial and development assistance to the City and the business community. The DEGC also serves as the professional and administrative staff for the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the Economic Development Corporation of the City of Detroit (EDC), Tax Increment Finance Authority, and Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (DBRA). The DEGC is the lead organization for implementation of permanent revitalization improvements (the Lower Woodward Improvement Program) for Superbowl XL, held in Detroit on February 5, 2006.

In 2006 Mr. Jackson assumed the responsibilities of Chief Development Officer for the City of Detroit. This position includes the responsibility of overall coordination of City economic development activity, as well as supervision of the City Planning and Development, and Environmental Affairs Departments.

Mr. Jackson is also the past Chairman and serves as a Board member of the NextEnergy Corporation, a corporation committed to making Michigan a world leader in alternative energy by advancing the use of alternative energy through groundbreaking research, design, manufacturing, education, commercialization and the marketing of alternative technologies.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Jackson was Director of Customer Marketing for DTE Energy, where he worked for 27 years. Areas reporting to the Director of Customer Marketing include Economic Development, Strategic Marketing Processes, Product Development, Program Management, Customer Research and Information and Ethnic Marketing. Under Mr. Jackson’s leadership the DTE Energy Economic Development Department gained national recognition and was a recipient of the Site Selection Magazine Utility Economic Development Award. Mr. Jackson has also played an influential role in City of Detroit, Southeastern Michigan and State of Michigan economic development programs, projects, initiatives and organizations.

Additional experience includes Personnel and Human Resources with the United States Navy, Adjunct faculty at Lawrence Technological University School of Management, and professional level positions at Detroit Edison in the Human Resources, Organizational Planning and Development and Power Generation organizations.

George W. Jackson, Jr. is a native Detroiter, and a graduate of Detroit Cooley High School, Oakland University (B.S. Human Resource Development) and Central Michigan University (M.A. Management – Business Management).

Sandra Pierce

Ms. Pierce is the President & CEO of Charter One Bank in Michigan and Indiana. Charter One Bank, N.A. is a $46 billion bank operating in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Charter One is a subsidiary of Citizens Financial Group, Inc., a $161 billion commercial bank holding company headquartered in Providence, R.I. Citizens’ corporate parent is RBS (The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc).

Ms. Pierce began her successful and diverse banking career in 1978 when she joined NBD Bancorp as a teller while attending Wayne State University. Upon graduation, she held a number of significant roles in commercial banking, retail banking, marketing and private client services at NBD and its successor organizations First Chicago NBD, Bank One and JP Morgan Chase.

In 2002, Ms. Pierce became regional executive of the Retail Midwest Region at Bank One. In this role, Ms. Pierce managed 350 bank branches that served over one million households and provided a full suite of consumer services including: mortgages, small business loans, consumer loans and investments.

In January 2005, Ms. Pierce brought her leadership experience, local market insight and customer service expertise to Charter One Bank as President and CEO in Michigan. In December 2005, Ms. Pierce was also named President & CEO, Charter One Bank, Indiana. As president & CEO, Ms. Pierce is responsible for all local business, community and charitable giving decisions. In addition, she serves on the company’s Executive Policy Committee. Under her leadership, Ms. Pierce launched several signature Charter One initiatives including Champions in Action®, Job Creation Loan Program and Housing Bank. For the second consecutive year, Charter One was named the No. 1 SBA lender in Michigan.

 

James Nicholson
President & CEO
PVS Chemicals, Inc.

James B. Nicholson is President, Chief Executive Officer and Principal Shareholder of PVS Chemicals, Inc., an international manufacturer and marketer of water-treatment and other chemical products. Since its founding in 1945, PVS has maintained its world headquarters in Detroit, and it now employs approximately 1,000 people worldwide in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia. Before joining PVS in 1972, Mr. Nicholson held positions at The First National Bank of Chicago offices in London, England and Dublin, Ireland.

Mr. Nicholson has been a member of the Board of Directors of Amerisure Companies since 1982 and is now its Chairman. Mr. Nicholson also currently serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of Detroit Public Television (Channel 56), and sits on the Boards of the Handleman Company, Standard Federal Bank (ABN-AMRO), Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Regional Chamber (Past Chairman) and the Michigan Chapter of the Nature Conservancy (Past Chairman).

Active innumerous civic organizations, Mr. Nicholson was appointed by Gov. John Engler in 2000 to serve on the Huron Clinton Metropolitan Authority. In 2002, Gov. Engler appointed Mr. Nicholson to the Wayne County Airport Authority, where he functions as Vice Chair. He also now serves on The Council of the Graduate School of Business at The University of Chicago and is affiliated with the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit and United Way Community Services.

Mr. Nicholson earned his BA in Economics from Stanford University in 1964 and his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1967. In 1968, he received a Master of Science Degree in Economics from the London School of Economics. A Michigan native, he and his wife, Ann, reside in Grosse Pointe Farms and have four adult sons.

Anthony Earley

Anthony F. Earley, 58, has been chairman and chief executive officer of DTE Energy (NYSE: DTE), a Detroit-based diversified energy company since 1998. DTE Energy owns Detroit Edison, an electric utility serving 2.2 million customers in Southeastern Michigan and Michigan Consolidated Gas Company (MichCon), a natural gas utility serving 1.3 million customers in more than 550 communities throughout Michigan. DTE Energy also owns several nationwide non-utility companies engaged in providing energy services to large industrial customers, the transportation and storage of fuels such as natural gas and coal, energy trading and the development of unconventional gas resources.

Earley is currently a Vice Chair of the Edison Electric Institute, the trade association of investor utilities. In this role he is actively involved in the development of national policies on energy, the environment and climate change issues. As a former Chair of the Nuclear Energy Institute, he has played an active role in revitalizing the nuclear industry in the United States.

Earley is a member of the board of directors of Comerica Inc. and MASCO Corporation. He is on the board of directors of numerous educational and civic organizations, including the Nuclear Energy Institute, Edison Electric Institute, Detroit Renaissance, the Detroit Zoological Society, United Way for Southeastern Michigan and Cornerstone Schools. John Rakolta

John Rakolta, Jr. is the only son of John Rakolta a prominent citizen of Detroit, Michigan. He heads up one of the largest construction firms in the United States, Walbridge. This privately held construction firm specializes in the Design/Build/Management and Development of large-scale federal and industry-specific projects. It also serves the commercial, municipal, educational and housing markets. Walbridge is the World Leader in building complex manufacturing facilities. Many of its relationships with its customers date back almost 100 years.

John Rakolta, Jr. received his Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Marquette University in 1970. Thereafter, he completed the Smaller Company Management Program at the Harvard Business School. Richard Russell

Amerisure Mutual Insurance Company

Mr. Russell received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of South Carolina (1972).

Mr. Russell's insurance career includes technical and managerial positions with the American Mutual Fire Insurance Company (beginning in 1973), including Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (1986); election to the Board of Directors (1986); and President and Chief Executive Officer (1987).

With the 1991 conversion from a mutual company to a stock company, then known as Unisun Insurance Company, Mr. Russell continued to serve as its President and Chief Executive Officer until August 1997.

Mr. Russell was elected Executive Vice President - Amerisure Companies (May 1995); President, COO & Director (November 1995); and CEO (May 1996).

He currently is a member of the Board of Directors of the Detroit Regional Chamber, Michigan Chamber of Commerce, Michigan Manufacturing Association and Detroit Renaissance. He also is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI).

Hans-Werner Kaas

McKinsey & Company – Detroit Office

Hans-Werner Kaas is a Director (senior partner) in the Detroit Office of McKinsey & Company, which is part of the Midwest Office complex. He joined McKinsey & Company in 1991 as a Business Analyst in the Duesseldorf office. He is the Detroit office location manager and co-leader of the North American Automotive/Industrial & Assembly practice. Before transferring to the Detroit Office, Hans-Werner also worked in the Vienna, Frankfurt, and the Cleveland Offices of McKinsey & Company.

During his career at McKinsey, Hans-Werner has played a key role in opening McKinsey's Detroit office and building its North American Automotive & Assembly Practice, which serves many of the leading global players in the automotive and machinery industries.

He has also helped building the firm's presence and client service in the operations area in North America, in particular by leading its Product Development Practice and its Global Operations Strategy Initiative.

His knowledge development and research interest is centered around large-scale performance transformations and global operations. He has co-authored papers and books on the topics of product development transformation, quality management, integrated cost reduction, profitable growth in the automotive supply industry, and optimization of the cooperation between automotive manufacturers and suppliers.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Hans-Werner Kaas worked as an investment analyst at Imperical Chemical Industries in Durban/South Africa and as strategic planning analyst at Daimler-Benz AG/Stutgart. Hans-Werner Kaas holds a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engi¬neering and Business Administration from the Technical University of Kaiserslautern/Germany. He received a scholarship of the Foundation of the German People (1986-1991).

Before he started his university studies he served in the German Air Force on the staff of the wing commander of Jet Fighter Wing 33.
